Praised for his “iridescent countertenor” (The New York Times) and “intense stage presence” (Classical Voice North America), Chinese countertenor Chuanyuan Liu is a leading presence amidst the new generation of countertenors. Previous highlights include appearances with The Philadelphia Orchestra in The Hours, Pittsburgh Opera in Ariodante and In a Grove, Santa Fe Opera in M. Butterfly (cover), Kansas City Symphony in Messiah, Hudson Hall in Giulio Cesare, Chautauqua Opera Company in Lincoln in the Bardo, and Aspen Opera Theater in Bel Canto. In the 2025-26 season, Chuanyuan returns to White Snake Projects to premiere the role of Raven in White Raven, Black Dove, makes his Cedar Rapids Opera debut as Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, and joins The Virginia Consort and The Handel Choir of Baltimore as the countertenor soloist of Bernstein’s Chichester Palms.

Chuanyuan is a 2024 winner of the Sullivan Foundation Award, a two-time National Semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and has won awards from Opera Index, Butler International Opera Competition, Pasadena Vocal Competition, the Gerda Lissner Foundation, amongst others. Chuanyuan earned his Bachelor of Arts at University of Virginia, Master of Music at Bard College Conservatory’s Graduate VAP Program, and an Artist Diploma at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
