Michigan-based soprano Angela Bonello is passionate about using her voice to spread joy through opera, art song, oratorio, choral music, sacred music, and musical theatre. She has earned top honors in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Michigan and Regional Competitions, including winning Second Place at the 2025 NATS Regional Competition. Recently, she was awarded three prizes in the National 2026 George Shirley Vocal Competition, including the Soprano Prize and the Contemporary Art Song Prize. She was also named a Semifinalist in the international Lotte Lenya Competition (2021), was awarded the First Place Charlotte Ruppel Memorial Voice Award through the Birmingham Musicale (2024), received the Blanche Z. Hoffman Memorial Voice Award from Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) Philanthropies, Inc. (2025), was awarded First Place in the Neapolitan Song Vocal Competition at the University of Michigan (2026), and was one of five recipients of the 2026 Earl V. Moore Awards, which earned her the privilege of performing an aria at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance commencement ceremony. She has participated in summer programs Bel Canto in Tuscany (2023) and American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz (2024), where she was a semifinalist in the Meistersinger Competition. During July 2025, Angela made her Italian debut performing Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro at Saluzzo Opera Academy in Saluzzo, Italy.

Angela’s concert soloist experience includes Handel’s Messiah with the Grand Traverse Chorale, Fauré’s Requiem with the Choral Artists of Michigan, and Bach’s Magnificat with the Macomb Symphony Orchestra. Operatic roles during her time at Michigan include Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Despina in Così fan tutte. Additionally, while at Michigan, she participated in two orchestral workshop performances of contemporary operatic works through OperaLab at Michigan, including Lucy in The House on Mango Street (Bermel) and Witch 1 in Working for the Macbeths (Navarro). She performed Papagena in The Magic Flute as part of Opera de Metro’s inaugural season and covered First Lady in the same production. Additional roles through Oakland University include Sister Constance in Dialogues of the Carmelites and Patience in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Patience. Angela has participated in performance outreach with the Motor City Lyric Opera, created the role of Beth the Butterfly in a workshop of a new anti-bullying children’s opera with the MCLO, and sings with multiple seasonal vocal ensembles at the historic Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. She is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity (SAI) and earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Oakland University in 2022. Angela graduated with her Master of Music degree in Voice & Opera Performance from the University of Michigan, where she studied with Caitlin Lynch, in May 2026. Beginning in Fall 2026, she will continue her studies in the Artist Diploma program with a teaching assistantship at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she will study voice in a co-teaching arrangement with Abigail Nims and Jennifer Bird.
